Billet Host Families Needed for Okanagan Rockets

July 24, 2017

The Okanagan Rockets are looking for ‘Host’ families to billet players that live outside the Kelowna area and are playing for the Rockets for the 2017-2018 season.

Our team consists of young men aged 15 to 17 that attend high school full time at Okanagan Mission Secondary in Kelowna. As part of their schooling, the players are on the ice during the day partaking in the Hockey Canada Skills Academy. In addition, the players participate in team practices Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as dry-land and off-ice training during the week. The Okanagan Rockets schedule consists of 20 home games (10 home weekends with games on Saturday evening and Sunday morning) and 20 away games (10 away weekends with games on Saturday evening and Sunday morning). Given the team’s demanding schedule, it is very impractical to have players live outside of the Kelowna city area.

We are seeking community-spirited families to ‘host’ our young players, and give them a supporting environment that help transition them to living away from home, as well as succeed with their daily schedule. The players on the Okanagan Rockets are elite-level hockey players and are young men with aspirations of continuing their hockey at the next level. These are young men with character, dedication and discipline. Their behavior, attendance and scholastic performance will be supervised at the school by our school liaisons, and no responsibility will be placed on host families for this aspect of hosting.

Host families will be educated as to what is expected both by themselves and the player, and to this extent clear guidelines will be established. In addition to the support and positive environment that is to be provided, host families are expected to transport players to and from school and hockey related activities (note: transportation for the player is provided for all away games).  Host families will have direct and regular communication with the Okanagan Rockets General Manager, Head Coach and the player’s parents to ensure household rules and responsibilities are being met.

Hosting an elite high school athlete is a rewarding and life-changing experience for all involved. Our commitment to you is that we will work tirelessly to ensure players and families have a positive experience.
