The Okanagan Rockets were 20 seconds away from the semi finals at KIMMT, but surrendered a late goal and eventually fell 2-1 in overtime at the hands of the Moose Jaw Generals.
The first period saw a scoreless draw between both sides despite a few good chances each way. Liam Hughes stood tall for the Rockets making eight first period saves while Moose Jaw netminder Colby Entz was terrific, making 14 saves in the first period and the reason why the game was scoreless after one.
Lucas Cullen would give the Rockets the lead at the 7:30 mark of the 2nd frame. Cullen was spotted with a nice pass from Eli Zummack and Lucas made no mistake, burying his 2nd goal of the tournament glove side to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead. Liam Hughes was strong in goal against for the Rockets, stopping all 7 shots he saw in the 2nd and turned aside all of the 15 shots he’d seen in the game at that point.
The Rockets were 20 minutes away from advancing to the semi finals when 3rd period play started and looked strong through the first eighteen and a half minutes of the frame. The Generals pulled their goaltender with 1:15 remaining in the 3rd period and while the 6-on-5 commenced, heartbreak ensued.
With 20 seconds to go, a scramble in front resulted in a loose puck in the slot and Generals forward Tyson Manz made no mistake, beating a sprawled Hughes to tie the game at one, ending the Rockets chances of moving on to the semi final game.
The game was tied at one after sixty minutes and needed overtime, where again it was Manz beating Hughes on a 2-on-1 to end the game and give Moose Jaw a 2-1 victory in overtime.
Liam Hughes was excellent for the Rockets today, stopping 26 of 28 shots he faced including a couple of huge saves to keep the game 1-0 for a long time. Colby Entz was equally as superb, making 37 saves on 38 shots.
A tough pill to swallow for the Rockets who will return to BCMML action next weekend (January 16th and 17th) when they travel to Nelson to take on the Kootenay Ice. Game times are set for 7:00 pm Saturday night and 12:45 pm Sunday afternoon in Nelson. Catch all the action live on www.playfullscreen.com.
