Rockets Sweep Chiefs At BCMML Showcase

January 25, 2016

The Okanagan Rockets showcased their strong play at the BCMML Showcase with a weekend sweep of the Vancouver North East Chiefs.

The Rockets started the weekend off with a tight 2-1 win on Saturday night against the Chiefs, scoring first, after a scoreless first period, with the 12th goal of the season coming from Lucas Cullen in period #2. Harris Pearce played a big part in the Chiefs scoring over the weekend and found the back of the goal in the second period as well. A late 2nd period marker by Hayden Dick, his 10th goal of the season, proved to be the difference in a tight checking game that went to the visiting Rockets.

The Rockets capped off the BCMML Showcase weekend with a strong performance on Sunday afternoon. Hayden Dick found the back of the goal for the 2nd time on the weekend and the 11th time this season. TJ Prexler tied the game for only a few moments before Eli Zummack potted his 7th goal of the season to give OK the lead back heading into the 3rd period. Logan Bromhead would again tie the game for the Chiefs in the 3rd before the eventual game winner from Lucas Cullen, his 13th of the year, and an insurance marker from Danny Gatenby, his 1st goal back in an OK Rocket jersey, propelled the Rockets to a 4-2 win and a weekend sweep of the Chiefs.

With the injury to Liam Hughes, Cole Demers manned the Rockets crease for the duration of the weekend and played extremely well, stopping 49/52 shots over the two-game sweep and earned his 14th and 15th wins of the season. Andrew Henderson played on Saturday and made 22 saves on 24 shots while Kolby Matthews saw the net on Sunday and stopped 28 of 32 shots.

The Rockets (19-8-2) return to action on Friday night at 8:00 PM, playing a make up game against the South Island Royals (12-11-6) and are back at the Capital News Centre for the first time in 46 days and for the first time in 2016. It’s a three-game weekend for OK as they will play a weekend set against the Greater Vancouver Canadians at CNC. Game times set for 3:00 PM Saturday and 10:00 AM Sunday.
