The Okanagan Rockets will look for a repeat performance of last night as they face-off against the Valley West Hawks in a winner-take-all Game #3.
The Rockets staved off elimination with a well-played 2-1 victory at the South Surrey Arena last night. The Rockets got an early goal from Chase Stevenson on a high blocker snipe just 48 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead. Okanagan would take a 2-0 lead on a blocker side shot from the right wing and would eventually be the game winner. Bobby Russell provided the only blemish on what was a nearly perfect night for Rockets net minder Cole Demers. His 45 saves were the most he’s had to make all season, including a big 21 save third period to secure a Game #2 win and force Sunday’s Game #3.
Last night was the first time in the playoffs the Hawks have been allowed to just one goal, scoring 23 goals in just three playoff games before that. The Rockets have also only allowed one even strength goal in the series with the Hawks scoring 6 of their 7 goals on the man advantage, which makes today’s key for today rather easy: stay out of the penalty box.
The Rockets will be without the services of Hayden Dick, Shawn Guison & Ben Dietrich-Scammell again for Sunday’s game. Dick and Guison are sidelined with injuries while Dietrich-Scammell wad suspended three games for a match penalty he received on Friday night. He will be serving the 2nd of his 3-game ban today. The Rockets will also be without assistant coach Brendan Persley for the 2nd straight game as he is also away from the bench due to a suspension.
Both of the BCMML’s semi-finals will go the distance as the Cariboo Cougars and the Vancouver North West Giants will also play Game #3 of their series Sunday morning with both teams having won a game there. The winner of that game and the Rockets-Hawks game today will face off in the BCMML Final next weekend. Every game can be seen live on www.playfullscreen.com.
