The Okanagan Rockets will fight for their playoff lives on Saturday night when they take on the Valley West Hawks in Surrey.
The Rockets will be looking to rebound after an undisciplined 6-2 loss last night in South Surrey. Okanagan came out hard and with a strong push of the opening faceoff, getting a 1-0 lead on a SHG by Chase Stevenson just 2 minutes into the game and holding a lead after the first period. The Hawks would quickly find their game in the 2nd frame with three goals and the Rockets began to unravel into what would be a long, penalty-filled final period. Valley West added three more goals before Myles Mattila closed out the game with a late third period goal but the damage had been done in a 6-2 win for the Hawks.
The Rockets will need a much more disciplined effort in tonight’s game after allowing 12 power plays to a dangerous Valley West PP that struck 5 times with the man advantage. Cole Demers was excellent in goal for the Rockets despite the lope sided score line as he made 46 saves on the 52 shots he faced where things could’ve been much worse without him in the crease.
Okanagan will be playing a couple players short in their do-or-die Game #2 today with Hayden Dick and Ben Dietrich-Scammell both out for tonight. Dick is lost with an upper body injury for tonight while Dietrich-Scammell was given a match penalty last night and will be unavailable to play tonight. The Rockets will also be without assistant coach Brendan Persley, who was ejected last night and, under BC Hockey’s rules, will automatically miss one game with a suspension.
Game #2 goes tonight at 6:30 PM from the South Surrey Arena. If the Rockets can win tonight, Game #3 will take place tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM from the South Surrey Arena as well. Every game can be seen live on www.playfullscreen.com.
