The Okanagan Rockets used a 45 save performance from Cole Demers to keep their season alive with a 2-1 victory in Game #2 over the Valley West Hawks.
The Rockets would again get off to a good start to the game but this time, the scoring came just 48 seconds in and it came from a familiar face. Chase Stevenson raced down the zone and fired a shot past Hawks net minder Nic Tallarico and his blocker for his 4th of the playoffs and an early 1-0 Okanagan lead.
OK had to kill off three penalties in the opening frame and with the help of a cross bar went to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Rockets goaltender Cole Demers was again excellent in the opening stanza. Making 14 saves on 14 shots. Tallarico was also good, making a big shorthanded breakaway stop on Lucas Cullen at the tail end of the period.
Each team would hit the score sheet in the 2nd frame and it started with the Rockets taking a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into the period. Lucas Cullen walked in on the right wing and beat Tallarico with a short side wrister for his 3rd goal of the playoffs to give Okanagan a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks would get themselves within one on the power play with a slap shot from the top of the point by Bobby Russell coming just 8 seconds into the man advantage to cut the deficit to one.
That would be how the score line would hold up through 40 minutes with the Rockets leading 2-1 while outshooting the Hawks 16-11 in the 2nd period and 27-25 over the course of two stanzas.
The third period would be full of chances but no team would find the score sheet with Cole Demers being the biggest reason why. Demers made 21 3rd period saves en route to the Rockets tying the best-of-three series at one to one. Demers made a total of 45 saves on 46 shots in Game #2 while Nic Tallarico stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced.
The Rockets and Hawks will come down to a third and deciding Game #3 Sunday afternoon with face-off scheduled for 3:00 PM from the South Surrey Arena. The game can be seen live on www.playfullscreen.com.
