The BC Major Midget League announced Friday afternoon that Okanagan Rockets goaltender Cole Demers is named as the Player Of The Month for January.
Demers, 16, has put up outstanding numbers all season long and January was no exception to that, posting a 6-0-1 record while playing in all of the seven Rockets games in January to go along with a superb 1.29 GAA for the month. Demers was handed a heavy workload with an injury to Liam Hughes and was put into every game and excelled.
“Due to an injury to Liam Hughes, Cole was placed into a tough situation of carrying a heavy load of playing in January,” commented Rockets GM Braeden Pistawka, “He excelled in this situation, playing all seven games and carried the team to an undefeated record with two shutouts. Cole showed no signs of fatigue and was a positive influence on and off the ice for the team.”
The Kelowna native has been having a memorable 2nd season with the Rockets, leading the BCMML in wins with 17 and 2nd in the MML with a 1.81 GAA. Demers has also seen time with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL, affiliating in numerous games for the Junior “A” franchise. Cole is also the 2nd Rocket to receive BCMML Player Of The Month honours as former Rocket forward Matt Kowlaski was named the POM for the month of November.
In his time away from the rink, Cole volunteers with peer mentoring at Okanagan Mission Secondary School. He also helps out in the school’s resource room at lunch, spending time with learning disabled students.
The Rockets (21-10-3) return home to Capital News Centre for Valentine’s Day weekend when there will surely be no love lost between the Rockets and the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds (14-14-6). Game times are set for 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon and 10:00 am Sunday morning. All games are available to be watched live on www.playfullscreen.com.
