Hughes, 16, is in his 1st season with the Rockets, coming over from the Yale Hockey Academy in the summer to play with Okanagan. Liam appeared in 10 games this season, posting a 4-3-1 record and a 2.32 GAA. The Kelowna native is an Edmonton Oil Kings draft pick, being picked in the 7th round, 152nd overall in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.
“It is unfortunate that we will be losing a valuable member of our team for the remainder of the season,” stated Rockets general manager Braeden Pistawka, “Under doctor’s and trainer’s advisement, Liam will no longer be available for the remainder of the 2016 season and playoffs. Everyone involved feels that it is in Liam’s best interest to rest and attempt a full recovery, before beginning his training for the jump to junior hockey next season."
In a related move, the Rockets would like to announce that 16 year-old goaltender Nikolas Bregeda will be joining the team for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.
Bregeda played this season with the West Kelowna Tier 2 Midget team and was made available to the Rockets with his midget squad being eliminated in the first round of their playoffs against Salmon Arm. Bregeda also has seen time with the Rockets this season, affiliating in numerous games.
“We are confident in Nik’s ability to step in and compete at the BCMML level,” continued Pistawka, “Nik been apart of our program as affiliate from day one and he is going to be a great fit for the remainder of the season.”
The Rockets would like to wish the best to Liam Hughes in his recovery and would like to welcome Nikolas on a full time basis.
The Rockets (21-10-3) return home to Capital News Centre for Valentine’s Day weekend when there will surely be no love lost between the Rockets and the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds (14-14-6).
