The Okanagan Rockets spent Halloween in Richmond, picking up a 3-0 shutout win Saturday but dropping a 3-2 game on Sunday to settle for a weekend split against the Greater Vancouver Canadians.
The Rockets started the weekend off perfectly, getting a goal in each of the three periods. It all started with Alec Zawatsky at the 11:56 mark of the first period, netting his 10th goal of the season for a 1-0 Rockets lead. OK extended their lead in the 2nd frame on a goal from an unlikely source. Cody Schiavon blasted home his first BCMML goal to give the visitor’s a 2-0 lead. The Rockets rounded out the scoring in the 3rd thanks to Hayden Dick’s 6th goal of the season to finish with a 3-0 shutout win. Liam Hughes backstopped the Rockets to a win on Saturday, collecting his 2nd straight shutout; this one coming on 28 saves.
Sunday’s game saw Greater Vancouver jump out to a 3-0 lead, getting goals from Scott Atkinson and Thomas Von Schoenberg in the first period while leading scorer Matheson Kroeker tallied in the 2nd period to put Cole Demers and the Rockets behind the eight ball. OK got a late 2nd period goal courtesy of Chase Stevenson, his 8th goal of the season to make the score 3-1 Greater Vancouver. Zach Erhardt plotted his 6th of the season at the 16:37 mark of the 3rd period to close the gap to one goal but that’s as close as the Rockets would come as GVC took the final game of the weekend by a 3-2 score.
The Rockets (8-5-1) will return home this weekend for a pair of games against longtime rival, the Valley West Hawks (8-3-1) in what is set to be an intense and exciting weekend of hockey from the Capital News Centre. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon and 10:00 am on Sunday morning and can be seen, as always, on www.playfullscreen.com.
