Rockets Take Ice Breaker Opener

September 12, 2015

The Okanagan Rockets opened up the End of the Roll Ice Breaker Tournament with a 6-2 victory over the Pursuit of Excellence Friday morning.

POE was first to strike 4:28 into the first period but the Rockets came back just 47 seconds later on a scramble play to even the score. Alec Zawatsky potted his first of three goals on the morning as he wrapped it around the net on POE goaltender Austin Poulin. The Rockets would take the lead late in the frame on a sharp angle shot from the left corner courtesy of Rayman Bassi to push the score in favour of the Rockets, 2-1, after 20 minutes.

The 2nd period is where the Rockets started to pull away from POE and 5:32 into the middle stanza, Ethan Trampuh put the Rockets ahead by two. Trampuh took a pass from Powell Connor and made no mistake on the breakaway, beating Poulin to make it a 3-1 hockey game. Jameson Murray put the Rockets ahead by a field goal halfway through the period as he danced around Poulin and tucked the puck in on the glove side. The big defensemen’s goal would extend the Rockets lead to 4-1 after 2 periods.

Early in the 3rd period, Zawatsky would collect his second goal of the contest on another jam play on Poulin’s glove side and jus 1:14 into the final frame, the Rockets extended their lead to 5-1. Alec would complete his hat trick 6:29 into the 3rd off the rush, going bar down from the right wing for the Rockets 6th goal. POE would add a goal before the final buzzer to make the final score 6-2 in favour of the Okanagan Rockets.

Cole Demers played the first half of today’s game, allowing one goal while Nic Bregeda finished off the Rockets win, also allowing just one goal against.

The Rockets are back in action at the End of the Roll Ice Breaker Tournament Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm when they take on the Compete Hockey Academy from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho at the Capital News Centre. It will be the first of two games for the host team tomorrow, as they will also battle the Okanagan Hockey Academy’s White team at 6:45 pm.
