The Okanagan Rockets fell to 0-2-0 at the Annual Mac's Midget Tournament after a disappointing 6-3 loss to the Ontario Avalanche U18 squad from Northern California on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena.
With the loss, the Rockets were eliminated from playoff contention.
The Rockets and Avs were even at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play thanks to a late goal from Levi Johnson at the 19:23 mark of the 1st.
The 2nd period was the undoing of the Rockets as they allowed the Avs to build up a 5-1 lead thanks to 4 unanswered goals in a rough 10 minute stretch that chased Rockets starter Cole Demers from the net in his Mac's debut.
Zak Erhardt scored a late 2nd period short handed goal, and then an early 3rd period power play goal to pull the Rockets back to within striking distance, however just over a minute after Erhardt made it 5-3, Carter Rhine was whistled for hooking penalty that resulted in a penalty shot goal from Coby Downs to essentially put the game away at 6-3.
Downs became the 2nd straight player to record a hat-trick against the Rockets in the event.
The Rockets will now have a break before returning to play on Dec 29th agains the high-flying Regina Pat Canadians at 7:00 pacific time. The Rockets will then close out the event on Dec 30th against Grand Prairie.
