The Okanagan Rockets opened the BCMML championship series with a 2-1 win over the Giants on Friday night at the Burnaby Winter Club. The Rockets now lead the best of 3 series 1 game to none.
The Rockets received goals from Tanner Browne (1st) and Liam Finlay (10th), both of which came with the man advantage.
After a wild three games series with the Valley West Hawks in which the two teams combined for 31 goals, it was a much tighter affair on Friday night.
The 1st period was a feeling out process and the clubs finished the opening 20 scoreless. The Rockets outshot the Giants 15-14.
In the 2nd, Browne got things going 2:30 into the 2nd as he banged in a power play goal from the slot.
The Giants would then pull even with a power play goal of their own at 11:34 of the 2nd before Liam Finlay restored the Rockets 1 goal lead at 2-1 with his 10th of the playoffs.
Try as they might, the Giants couldn't beat Rockets goaltender Brendan Barrie in the 3rd and the Rockets held on for a 2-1 win.
Barry was sensational in goal as he made 41 saves to improve to 5-1 in the playoffs.
"It's nice to get the first one, but as we learned last weekend against the Valley West Hawks, the 2nd win is much tougher to come by." said Rockets general manager David Michaud. "The Giants are the 5 time defending champions for a reason, and we certainly don't think they are just going to roll over and give us the title because we pulled this one out. Tomorrow will be the toughest game of the year for our group."
The Rockets became the first road club to win a game at the Burnaby Winter in 13/14. Much like the Rockets, the Giants went 19-0-1 at the BWC during the regular season, and were 4-0 during the playoffs.
Game 2 goes tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm. If you can't be at the BWC, watch on pay per view atwww.playfullscreen.com
