Rockets Grit Out Road Win in Victoria
The Okanagan Rockets gritted out a 2-1 win over the South Island Royals on Saturday afternoon at Bear Mountain Arena.
The Royals refused to give in on an afternoon that the Rockets seemed determined to try and pull away.
Captain Branden Wagner notched his 20th goal of the season in the first period to open the scoring on the afternoon.
The Royals would pull even with just 1:20 remaining in the 2nd period as Jack Rachwalski ripped a shot from the slot past goaltender Brenden Mills for his 9th of the year.
In the 3rd, the Rockets got the game winner on a 2nd effort from Blanchard in the crease as he was able to poke the puck past Royals starter Jesse Jenks for the game winning goal. For Blanchard the goal was his team leading 27th of the year and his 5th game winning goal of the year.
Brenden Mills turned in a solid performence for his 10th win of the season. Mills turned aside 20 of 21 Royals shots. The Rockets fired a total of 46 at Jenks.
The win snapped a 4 game road losing streak for the Rockets and earned the club their 22nd win of the campaign. It's the first time since 2008-2009 when the club went 22-10-8 en route to a 3rd place finish. The club record for vicotries in a season remains 27 by the 2006-2007 version of the Rockets.
The scene will now shift to the Save on Foods Memorial Centre for tomorrow's contest. Game time is set for 10:00 am.
